May 1-7. In partnership with the American Humane Association, shelters across the United States sponsor a variety of events and activities designed to encourage citizens to treat animals with love and respect. For more information, visit www.americanhumane.org.

2. Animal Disaster Preparedness Day

2006 date to be determined. Sponsored by United Animal Nations, this day is devoted to helping pet owners find out how to take care of companion animals when natural disaster or other tragedies strike. Learn more at www.uan.org.

3. National Dog Bite Prevention Week
