Senior Dogs

Time To Cut Down Calories, Protein And Sodium

Because most dogs start slowing down around their 8th birthday, it is important to keep their diet, especially the amount of food they consume, in check. Constant overfeeding could lead to obesity, which is very, very dangerous and can lead to heart and kidney problems, joint pain, and a host of other unpleasant health issues. This would be a good time to switch to a dog food made especially for overweight or older dogs (these have fewer calories and less protein and sodium), and most importantly, speak to your veterinarian about your senior dog’s nutritional needs — in some cases, a prescription diet or a particular brand of food may be recommended.
