Tip 13 - TRAVEL

Water Supply

Animals get used to the organisms present in your local water, and these tend not to cause gastric disturbance. Different water supply, different story. The introduction of unfamiliar organisms can result in intestinal discomfort for your pet. And we all know it's no fun to travel with a stomach-ache. For short trips, just bring bottled tap water with you for your animals. For longer trips, help acclimate your pets to the water supply using this trick:

Fill a water bottle from home with tap water. At your first stop, allow your pet to drink from this water supply, then top off the bottle with local water. (So now you're at 2/3 tap water from home, 1/3 new local water). At the next stop, do the same. Give your pet a drink, then top off with local water. Introducing local water in this way helps their system acclimate to any new local parasites found in the water.
