Question 1
How do I decide which breed of dog is right for me?
Study! Libraries and book stores are full of resources designed to help the potential dog owner make a wise decision, and there is a breed out there for nearly every lifestyle. Also, speak to experienced dog owners and pet professionals (vets, shelter employees, doggie day care workers) - they have first-hand knowledge about what it is like to live with various breeds. First and foremost, though, be sure to choose a dog that is well-suited to your living environment.
Small dogs that enjoy cuddling on the couch, like Pugs or Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, are great for apartment and city dwellers. Playful breeds (Labs and Golden Retrievers) are ideal for families with children, and dogs that like to run and herd, such as Australian Cattle Dogs, do very well in rural areas with lots of land. Most of all, select a breed with traits that blend in well with your family's needs and daily routine (ultra-tidy people often like Poodles - they don't shed).
